"So okay, I don’t want to be
a traitor to my generation and all but I don’t get how guys dress today. I
mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy
pants and take their greasy hair (eww!) and cover it up with a backwards cap
and like, we’re expected to swoon? I don’t think so." - Cher
I feel
you Cher.
Clueless was one of the most iconic films
of the 90's. Alicia Silverstone's portrayal of the Los Angeles airhead was
surprisingly touching, resulting in Clueless
becoming a cult hit and one of the most critically acclaimed films of its
genre. Today it’s still one of the most relevant teen movies out there, along
with the much-loved Mean Girls and Donnie Darko. But what made Clueless so timeless was its subject
matter. Emma, Jane Austen’s novel was
brilliantly adapted to suit the 20th Century without feeling like a
rip off or a carbon copy.
Arguably
the best factor of the film is the fashion! It’s still completely relevant
today which is a testament to its versatility; just the other day my friend
came into my class, practically giddy at the new Clueless inspired range at New Look. Some of the most stylish,
fashion savvy girls I know cite it as their biggest inspiration for dressing.
Last year
Wildfox Couture released their collection We’re The Kids In America as a
tribute to Clueless director Amy Heckerling;
rather than simply draw inspiration from the movie, the entire campaign was
shot in the exact style of Clueless,
a homage to 90’s L.A. It’s pretty beautiful.
Now it
seems everybody is catching up – Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent was arguably the
spark that relit the fire with his Autumn collection, full of punky tartan
influences. This latest fashion week, Sister by Sibling dominated the runways
with their Clueless referenced
collection; its already trickling down into the high street in a Big Way, with
Asos and Topshop as the current high street.
All this
was firmly put on the map by Iggy Azalea’s recent video for her new song Fancy.
It’s a complete Clueless fan’s dream!
I think we can most definitely confirm this as a major moment in fashion right now
(or re-moment). Watch it below for all the 90’s goodness!
Cher
Horowitz, we salute you.
